CHAPTER 1: TAKEN AND PREPARED In the very late 1890s, European countries were in a scramble to divide up African lands to reap what they anticipated would be riches in natural resources. It wasn’t long before these white colonizers established their secure compounds using black labor for their comforts and security. Soon after that, families arrived and all manner of Western civilization was being established, including schools for their white children, faithful in the belief that their way of life secured their right and safety.
