I walked down the stairs and out to the sidewalk. The sun was beginning to set and the trees in the park cast long shadows over the flowerbeds and benches as I crossed the square. Halfway across I stopped and looked back. The last of the sunlight was still glaring off the windows of Nadine’s office building, so I couldn’t see into her office at all, but I was fairly sure she was watching me. I waved, then turned and continued on to the other side of the square and the restaurant I’d chosen. It was already somewhat crowded and I had to wait a while to be seated, so I entertained myself by programming my number into the speed-dial on Nadine’s phone, then setting it so that the picture I’d just taken of her …
